Julia Elisabeth Heiland, age 23, died on February 9, 2017, at her apartment in New York City.

A memorial service will be held in her honor at 11AM on Friday, February 17, 2017, at The Dover Church in Dover, MA. Private graveside services will be held at the Highland Cemetery in Dover where her beloved grandmother "Buggy" is buried.

Julia was born in Wiesbaden, Germany on March 23, 1993 to her loving parents, Heidi and Peter. She moved with her family to Medfield, MA at the age of one and to our current house in Dover at the age of 3. She traveled and had multiple adventures in her life, but Dover was always considered home.

She was a graduate of Dana Hall School in Wellesley in 2011 and then went on to attend college for two years at the University of Miami. Julia left Miami to follow a passion for adventure, which led her to spend two winters working, skiing, and snowboarding in Mammoth, CA, as well as time working as a river rafting guide in Southern California. This past fall she re-enrolled in college at Pace University in New York City where she was excited about completing her degree and pursuing a post graduate degree in Law.

In addition to winter sports, she loved skateboarding, shopping, family dinners with burgers on the grill, and absolutely everything to do with Christmas, but her greatest passion was animals. She spent hours loving and caring for her pets, Lexi, Bear, and Brooklyn, and they adored her in return. Julia was working at a shelter in New York at the time of her death, and was fostering a kitten she called Noodle.

Julia was a fiercely independent person and a free spirit at heart. She loved and adored her family and friends. One could not imagine a more genuine, caring, giving, and loving sister and daughter. Julia had an infectious sense of humor and a completely unique sense of style and personality. She has left an enormous hole in our hearts and in our family.

She is survived by her loving parents, Heidi and Peter, her younger sisters Elena and Caroline, and her grandmother Christel. She was preceded in death by her grandfather Fritz, and her grandmother Sadie "Buggy" Shippell.

In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Julia's name to the MSPCA, to honor her love of animals. Please send checks to MSPCA at 350 South Huntington Avenue Attention: Development, Boston, MA 02130 and include this note on your check: "Julia Heiland, Tree of Life." You may also donate online at and indicate that the donation is in honor of Julia Heiland.
