Tribute & Message From The Family

CUMMINGS, Eugene G., "Gene", of Westwood, MA, formerly of West Roxbury, MA, died Nov. 25th 2021 surrounded by his loving family. Beloved husband of Sheila G. (Langdon) Cummings for 59 years. Loving father of Michael and his partner Michelle Beckwith DiSalvio, Paul and wife Jeeraporn Poksupthong, Marilyn and her husband Dennis Cummings, Brian and his partner Anthony Shannon, Diane and her husband John Riccio.

Devoted grandfather of Kelly, Sean, Brian, Rachel, Kaitlin, Courtney and Giovanni. Devoted great-grandfather of Brooke. Son of the late Howard and Alice (Armstrong) of West Roxbury.
Brother of the late Phyllis and her husband the late John Maxwell of New Mexico, formerly of Virginia and Mattapan. Uncle of the late Jennifer Maxwell Litten. Also survived by many loving nieces and nephews.

Gene grew up in West Roxbury and graduated from St. Mary's HS in Brookline, where he met Sheila. He was named to the All-New England Catholic Basketball All-Star team his senior year. He also played football and baseball. He graduated with a bachelor's degree from Boston College.
He worked in the insurance industry for about 15 years, then worked for over 30 years as a probation officer at Dedham District Court.
Gene was an accomplished basketball referee, working high school and youth games for 25 years. He was also active for many years as a coach in Little League baseball, Pop Warner football and CYO basketball in Westwood and West Roxbury, and helped establish the West Roxbury Boys' Club in the 1970's. His players loved to play for him.

He also enjoyed swimming, music, playing and watching sports. He had season tickets to the Patriots for years in the 60's and 70's, and once caught a George Blanda field goal at Boston University Field in 1960.

But his favorite place was on the beach, and spent most of the summers of his life relaxing on or trying to get to Rexhame Beach in Marshfield, to spend time with his family and many lifelong friends.

Sheila, I'm sad to hear of Gene's death. My brother Brian told me about his passing. I've been living in Livermore, CA for many years. My husband died from ALS at age 52...I was blest with great kids...like you.
